How much do common projects take?

Pole barn or shop pad
Class 516-24 cu yd
Placed and compacted in 6 to 8 inch lifts for a level, solid pad.
Concrete garage slab base
Class 5~8 cu yd
The building code (IRC) calls for at least a 4 inch base of clean gravel under a slab on grade.
Storage shed base
Class 52.5-4 cu yd
A 4 to 6 inch compacted pad keeps the shed level and sheds water away from the floor.
New lawn topsoil
Screened topsoil27-41 cu yd
Fresh topsoil settles 10 to 15 percent, so order a little extra. 6 inches gives roots the most room.
Paver patio or walkway base
Class 5~2.5 cu yd
ICPI calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base for foot traffic, 6 to 8 where vehicles drive.
General fill notes
- Deep fills go in firmer when they are placed and compacted in 6 to 8 inch lifts, not all at once.
- Up here, frost and soft, wet, or clay ground usually call for more depth. A driveway or pad on poor soil is often built up 8 to 12 inches total.
- Under a concrete slab, the building code (IRC) calls for at least a 4 inch base of clean gravel. For pavers, the ICPI calls for at least 4 inches of compacted base for foot traffic and 6 to 8 inches where vehicles drive.
- Fresh topsoil settles about 10 to 15 percent, so order a little extra for a new lawn.
